Covering text is not always redaction
Some tools draw a black rectangle on top of the PDF while leaving the original characters in the file. Anyone can select or copy the “hidden” text. True privacy needs the content burned out — typically by re-rendering the page as an image with the boxes applied before export.

Step-by-step: black out PDF text in the browser
Step 1 — Open the tool and choose Redact
Open Sign or Redact PDF and select the Redact tab.
Step 2 — Load the PDF locally

Step 3 — Draw blackout boxes
Drag across each sensitive line. Use Undo last box or Clear boxes on this page if you need to adjust. Switch page thumbnails for multi-page files.
Step 4 — Sign in the same session if needed
Already placed a signature on the Sign tab? Switch back to Redact anytime — signatures remain visible as non-editable stamps so you can black out nearby fields without losing your placement. Then download once.
Step 5 — Download and verify
Click Download PDF. Open the result and try selecting the redacted area — the underlying text should not be copyable.
When to redact vs password-protect
- Redact when someone else must see the file but must not see specific fields.
- Password protect when only trusted people should open the document at all — use Protect PDF after redacting if needed.
