Edit the result, copy to clipboard, or download as a .txt file.

What is OCR and how does it work?

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a technology that converts printed or handwritten text in images into editable, machine-readable text. Our tool uses Tesseract, one of the most accurate open-source OCR engines, running entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. This means your images never leave your device — the entire process happens locally.

Simply upload a photo of a document, a screenshot, a scanned page, or any image containing text. The engine analyzes the pixel patterns and extracts the text, which you can then copy, edit, or download as a .txt file.

Tips for better OCR results

Use high-contrast images: Black text on a white background gives the best results. Avoid skewed or rotated text: Straighten your documents before uploading. Choose the right language: Select the document language to improve recognition accuracy. Avoid low-resolution images: Higher resolution means more detail for the engine to work with — aim for at least 300 DPI for scanned documents.

When to use image-to-text extraction

OCR is useful for digitizing printed documents, extracting text from screenshots, copying text from photos of whiteboards or signs, converting scanned PDFs into editable text, and making image-based content searchable. Our browser-based approach is ideal when privacy matters — medical records, legal documents, or proprietary business content never leave your computer.

Frequently asked questions

What is OCR (Optical Character Recognition)?

OCR is a technology that converts printed or handwritten text in images into machine-readable text. Our tool uses Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine, running entirely in your browser via WebAssembly.

Is my image uploaded to any server?

No. The entire OCR process runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device — no data is sent to any server.

What image formats are supported?

JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, and TIFF. Most common image formats from cameras, screenshots, and scanners are supported.

How accurate is the text extraction?

Accuracy is very high for clean, printed text in good lighting. Results may vary with handwritten text, low-resolution images, or complex layouts like tables and multi-column documents.

Can I extract text in languages other than English?

Yes. The tool currently supports English and Spanish. Select the document language before extracting for the best results.

Does it work with handwritten text?

The OCR engine works best with printed text. Handwritten text recognition is limited and results will vary depending on legibility.
