How to remove a background without uploading your photo
Most online background removers send your image to their servers to process it. That's fine for a meme, but not for an ID photo, a client's picture or a product that hasn't launched yet. Here's how to remove the background with the photo staying on your own device.
What happens to your photo on a typical online remover
When you use a cloud tool, your image is uploaded, processed on someone else's computer and sent back. You have to trust how that service stores, logs or reuses it, and many ask for an account first.
How in-browser background removal works
When you open the tool, your browser downloads a compact AI model once and keeps it in its cache. The model runs on your device using WebAssembly. Your photo is read into memory, processed and offered for download. The only things that come from the internet are the page code and the model, never your image.
How to check that nothing is uploaded
- Open the background remover and wait for "Model ready".
- In the same tab, turn off your Wi-Fi, or open your browser's developer tools on the Network tab.
- Process a photo. It still works, and no request carries your image. Don't reload the page while offline: the page itself needs a connection to load.
When privacy matters most
- ID cards, passports and documents.
- Photos of children or of clients.
- Unreleased products and confidential designs.
- Work photos covered by company or GDPR rules.
Limits to know
It processes one image at a time, up to 10 MB, in JPG, PNG or WebP, and always outputs a transparent PNG. The first run is slower while the model loads, and processing time depends on your device. Very fine hair can come out less clean than on cloud tools.

Frequently asked questions
Is my photo really not uploaded?
Yes. The AI model runs in your browser, so the image never leaves your device. You can test it by going offline in the same tab once the model has loaded.
Does it work offline?
Partly. Once the model has loaded, you can disconnect and keep processing images in the same tab. If you reload or come back later, you need a connection again.
Is it free?
Yes, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on uses.
Do I need a powerful computer?
A recent laptop or phone is usually enough. Older devices take longer.
