What is JPEG XL (.jxl) and how do you convert it to JPG?

JPEG XL promises smaller files and modern features, and since October 2026 Chrome and Firefox open it by default, as Safari already did. Many apps and websites still only accept JPG, though. Here is what that means for your workflow.

JPEG XL in plain English

JPEG XL (files ending in .jxl) is an image format from the JPEG committee meant to succeed classic JPEG. It can store HDR, wide gamut, transparency, and both lossy and lossless data in one container — often at smaller sizes than JPG or PNG for the same visual quality.

Browser support took years. Chrome dropped its experimental JXL support in 2022–2023 and Firefox only offered it in test builds, so for a long time Safari was the main browser that opened JXL. That changed in October 2026: Chrome 155 (October 6) and Firefox 158 (October 13) decode JPEG XL by default, with no setting to change. If your browser is up to date, a .jxl file opens in a tab. Image editors, social networks, email apps and upload forms are another story: many still expect JPG or PNG.

When you should convert JXL to JPG

  • Emailing attachments to people whose email app or image viewer doesn't open JXL
  • Uploading to social platforms that only accept JPG or PNG
  • Embedding images on websites that must also work in older browsers
  • Archiving photos in a format every editor understands

JPG is not as efficient as JXL, but it is still the universal interchange format in 2026.

How to convert .jxl to JPG today

Step 1 — Verify the file type

Extensions lie. Run the file through our Image Format Detector — it inspects magic bytes in your browser so you know you are dealing with real JPEG XL.

Step 2 — On Apple devices

Open the image in Preview or Photos on macOS/iOS, then export as JPEG. Safari 17 and later also displays JXL files directly.

Step 3 — On Windows and Linux

Use XnConvert, ImageMagick with libjxl, or GIMP with a JXL plug-in. These run locally — no upload required.

ImageConvertLab and JXL (honest status)

We don't have a dedicated JXL to JPG converter yet. Now that Chrome, Firefox and Safari decode JXL on their own, a converter that runs in your browser is much more practical, and we're looking at adding one. Until then, use the Apple or desktop options above.

Frequently asked questions

What is a .jxl file?

A .jxl file uses JPEG XL, a next-generation image format designed to replace JPEG, with better compression, HDR support and lossless options.

Which browsers support JPEG XL?

Chrome 155 and later (since October 6, 2026), Firefox 158 and later (since October 13, 2026) and Safari 17 and later open JPEG XL by default. Older browser versions and many apps and websites still don't, which is why converting to JPG or PNG is still common.

Is JPEG XL dead?

No. The standard is stable, and in October 2026 Chrome and Firefox joined Safari in opening it by default.

Does ImageConvertLab have a JXL to JPG converter?

Not yet. Use the Image Format Detector to confirm the file type. For now, convert with Preview or Photos on Apple devices, or with XnConvert, ImageMagick or GIMP on Windows and Linux.
